In May 2016 I was diagnosed with Stage 2 testicular cancer, it completely rocked me and my life was turned upside down. At the time I was in the middle of buying a house for my family and I had a little baby on the way due the following October. The cancer couldn't have come at a worse time. I underwent surgery to have the tumour and testy removed. I was then told I would have to go through chemotherapy as the cancer had spread to the lymph nodes in the pelvic area. I had to have numerous stays at Southend Hospital on the Elizabeth Lowry Ward for this treatment. This ward was truly amazing, the provided 24/7 care and helped me through my treatment. It didn't matter how bad a day the staff may have been having, they still walked around with a smile on their face and the warmest of hearts. They couldn't do enough to help me. They even helped my partner when she came to visit and thought she was going into premature labour by rushing her up to the maternity ward in a wheelchair. It became clear that they truly cared about my welfare and that of anyone on the ward whether a patient or not. Even once my treatment finished they still keep in touch and have even asked about my new daughter.
So as a way of saying thank you and helping to keep this superb care going myself and my colleagues have decide to complete in the Nuclear Mud Race on the 14th May 2017 with aim of getting sponsorship and donations that we will give to The Elizabeth Lowry Ward for machines, supplies and anything to help patients with there difficult treatment.
