Story
Applied Driving Techniques are sponsoring Emily Potter to represent her country in the World Transplant Games in Malaga 2017. Unfortunately, this event receives no government funding and therefore competitors are expected to fund this by themselves. We would like to raise the funds to help Emily reach her goal in competing in Malaga.
The World Transplant Games is an international sporting event for transplant athletes. It demonstrates the physical success of transplant surgery and the ability of transplant recipients to lead healthy, normal lives. The games represent the largest organ donor awareness event in the world.
In 2007 Emily was diagnosed with MPGN (type 2), a rare kidney disease that causes the deposits to build up in the capillaries of the Kidney. As Emily’s kidneys had completely failed she was put onto Dialysis (a blood filter that acts as a substitution for the kidney). During her time in hospital Emily contracted many hospital infections and eventually they led to her heart which caused infective endocarditis. It soon became clear that Emily’s Aortic heart valve would need to be replaced urgently. In June 2008 at Southampton General Hospital Emily was taken for open heart surgery where they replaced her Aortic heart valve successfully. Emily's dad was tested as a match for donating a kidney and was the perfect match. They had a date and the transplant went ahead.
Since Emily’s surgery she has been very active and involved herself in many sports. When she found out about the Transplant Games she decided to take up badminton which she now really enjoys and has become particularly good at. She now regularly plays as part of two clubs and also plays in league badminton matches. She has competed in South Africa in 2013 where she won 2 bronze medals.
