10.00 Pounds (UK), 10.00 Dollars(US) or equivalent in any other currency will be greatly appreciated.
Marigot Bay, St. Johns, Grenada from a distance looks like a Caribbean Ideal.
With its secluded Bay, fringed with palm trees, coral reef, small sandy beach, river and rich agriculture, the Bay was a striving hub of activity.
However, due to recent hurricane damage and certain amount of neglect, the infrastructure of the Bay is severely damaged and in need of repair.
In the 1950's, a concrete channel locally called the 'Scheme’ was built to carry the river to the sea without washing away the sand in the bay. The 'Scheme' also gave a 200x30 metres of concreted surface for the community to use: women to wash clothes, children to play, access to the beach for swimmers, safe place for fishermen to store their boats and sell their catch, etc.
The Scheme was severely damaged and there was no adequate access to the Bay from the road. You can see the destruction in the Photos below.
In 2014, we formed the Marigot Bay Restoration Society to raise funds and lobby the Government to restore Marigot Bay. In 2017, a path was constructed from the road to the Bay. While the construction of the path was welcome, the lack of a Handrail means the path still cannot be used by most of the residents.
The Society intends to continue to raise funds to add a Handrail, repair the ‘Scheme’ and add other facilities like showers and toilets to make Marigot Bay a ‘Destination’ and boost the local economy.
Any Donations, however small will be greatly appreciated. 100% of the funds raised will go for materials and to Construction Professionals. No fees or expenses will be taken by Committee Members.
Residents of Marigot and surrounding areas could contact their local Committee Members to make donations or volunteer. Donations can also be made to our Bank Account in Grenada, held at Scotiabank (The Bank of Nova Scotia,Halifax Street , St. Georges, Grenada). Account Number :3009134.
