Weʼve raised £1,500 to help fund the improvement of Bartley Reservoir's surrounding green spaces by updating an old 2009 design plan for the area.

Funded on Sunday, 30th April 2023

    Story

Bartley Reservoir's green spaces are an under-funded, under-maintained community asset that suffers high level of anti-social behaviour as a result of that lack of attention and investment. For some living near the reservoir this is their nearest public space and yet they cannot get to it due to lack of accessibility and basic infrastructure. Without investment the danger is the space falls further into disrepair.

Friends of Bartley Reservoir are a community group of local residents that want to change that. We see a vision of a new cohesive joined-up public space for Bartley Green residents that surrounds the reservoir's edge. We see an area well invested in, that connects people to their natural heritage, connects people with each other, and is accessible to all.

We now want to formalise and progress that vision, and what is now necessary is a fully costed feasibility design proposal, to create the clear vision for the reservoir's future for all to work towards, and the cost of this is £4,500 - to update a 2009 plan that was un-costed and unworkable (available to view at the library). Therefore, we are raising £2,250 towards that target. The council advise this update is needed before anything else can be progressed. Once achieved we can then apply for 'match funding' grants to secure the last 50%.

The raising of this money by the community will be strong evidence for the council when considering their budgets for projects, and for Friends of Bartley Reservoir when applying for grants, that this is a project the community themselves want and are invested in. There are around 25,000 residents in Bartley Green and if just a quarter gave the minimum £2 each, we'd smash it! Even better if you make a monthly direct debit contribution of £2 until we achieve our goal!

Thanks in advance for supporting us, for sharing our belief that the reservoir area can and should be better, and for investing in your community. Please share this page with family and friends :)

Week 14 and I made it! Officially finished on November 15th after the final leg involved walking the coastal John O Groats Trail from Inverness to John O Groats. Thankfully the brush had died off which meant I could cover the distance almost twice as fast then I had planned. Mercifully there was no rain, the weather was mild, with a fair few days of glorious blue skies and sunshine- including my last day of walking :). Amazing adventure and manged to shift a few covid stones of weight too :)

Week 12 of my hike from Land's End to John O Groats to raise money to improve Bartley Reservoir, and I have just 10 days to the go to the finish line! After crossing the hills of the Scottish Border Towns, I made my way between Edinburgh and Glasgow along the Union Canal, before joining onto to the West Highland Way Trail to Fort William. From there I walked the Great Glen Way to Inverness where I'm currently taking a few days rest. Finally, I will now walk up the East Coast to John O Groats! Picture: Views of Loch Ness.

Week 9 and I've reached Scotland! After heading north via the Peak District, Yorkshire Dales, and Northumberland National Park I finally crossed the border into Scotland and am currently in Jedbugh. There were 7 back to back days of solid rain, grey skies, wind and a broken phone which made the hills, mountains, and moors pretty grim! However, the temperature is now warmer, the weather better and my phone fixed. Just two more stages left. Next I head northwest towards the West Highlands.
