Story
On the 20th April 2018, my 24th Birthday, my best friend became paralysed. It is still unclear whether he will ever walk again, however I'm doing everything possible to help him.
The procedure cost £8000, thankfully insurance covered half, however they will only cover 10 physiotherapy sessions at £60p/session and do not cover equipment such as carts. Thankfully his a kind client had a set of wheeks thatcthey no longer required which means Darwin can still go on his walks! Under Darwins new physiotherapy regime the wheels must be used minimally and a new harness must be purchased to stabilise him! I don't expect to raise much, but many of you have enquired about donating to his rehabilitation; any and all monies raised will be used towards future physio sessions and mobility aids.
Darwin's story
20/04
The worst call I could imagine, Darwin, my 2 year old Frenchie was completely off his hind legs. I prepared for the worst. After fantastic efforts from Alexa at Grappenhall Vets we managed to get a referral centre to take him that night.
21/04
Call from the surgeon to say that it was bad news. A grade 5 traumatic disc, syringomyelia, hemi-vertebrae and hydrocephallus - there was nothing that could be done for him. The surgeon informed us he was requesting a second opinion but to prepare ourselves for the worst.
Second opinion report, disc herniation not as bad as initially thought! Only compressing 20-25% of his spinal cord rather than 70% Surgery is a go!
Surgery successful, disc material and haematomas removed however spinal cord extremely inflamed am- next few days touch and go with risk of myelomalacia.
22/04
Visited little man for the first time since the op. He looked so fragile yet would not for the life of him keep still! The nurses caring for him said that was their biggest struggle!
24/04
Darwin discharged - I cried. A lot.
The past few weeks have been a surreal, emotional blur. If you'd like to know more about Darwin please feel free to ask!
Thank you

6 years agoA quick update on where some of Darwin's funds are going! Last night his physiotherapist suggested a new harness that will further help us in controlling the movement of his back end whilst walking. The "Help 'em up" harness is specifically made for elderly pets and those recovering from surgery. Obviously these things don't come cheap, so I just wanted to thank you all once again for your kind donations, and a big thank you to OrthoPets for adding a veterinary discount to the harness. #GetDarwinWalkingAgain

6 years agoAlthough Darwin is loving his wheels and one of the happiest doggos you'll meet, we'd still love to get him walking again, if at all possible. Today we met with a new physiotherapist who, although it's a long and tiresome road ahead, believes that with Darwin's strength and determination he may be able to walk again! His new physiotherapy regime started today, which unfortunately means minimal use of his wheels which he's not too happy about. Please keep everything crossed for my little trooper! 🐶🖤
