    Story

This is Mareyah, she has a condition known as Trisomy 18 or Edwards Syndrome. Babies born with this condition are not offered the same medical treatment as other babies, this is because of out of date information going back to the 60's that our doctors, nurses and obstetricians are still trained on. During pregnancy we were told Mareyah would not be born alive and if she was she would be incompatible to life so it would be much kinder to terminate the pregnancy. This same information is given to every parent that is told their unborn baby has Edwards Syndrome. If you decide to continue with the pregnancy then no medical intervention or treatment would be offered if your baby managed to survive the birth, also you will be told to take your baby home enjoy every minute because babies with this condition don't live, we don't offer oxygen or resuscitation if your baby needs it, nor do we feed to nourish we will just keep the baby comfortable until the end. The picture painted was very grim to say the least. From this moment on we fought for Mareyah's life. Mareyah was born on the 4th August 2015, she is now 20 months old, she has proven the medics wrong in so many ways, she is also leading the way in changing the mindset of the doctors. After 8 months of fighting for a tracheostomy to enable Mareyah to breath properly, she finally got what she needed, here in Leeds at Leeds General Infirmary. This procedure or heart surgery has always been refused here in the UK based on the diagnosis and because "these babies don't live" and whilst a lot with this condition don't a small percentage do and maybe if treatment was made available then maybe more would live. Mareyah is the first with this condition to receive this surgery in the UK and she is doing great. A conference is being held to hopefully change the way the hospitals treat babies like Mareyah, we have doctors from US sharing their knowledge, we need help to fund this, can you help! all we are asking is £5, Thank u
