    Story

The St John Unit that I am a member of is fundraising to pay for the repairs of our headquarters where we meet every week. Edlington Unit is run from a portacabin in the car park of the Yorkshire Main Miners Welfare, Edlington Lane, Edlington. The building was given to us by British Coal over 25 years ago and unfortunately is looking a bit worse for wear.

Our unit consists of over 50 volunteers who range from the age of 7 years to 75 years. We are everyday people who want to help save lives in our local community and surrounding areas. As a first aider our volunteers deliver care to people in need at public events in and around Doncaster. Several of our volunteers also work with the members of our unit teaching them first aid and inspiring them to be the next generation of life savers.

Our unit at Edlington has been in existence since 1922 and is one of the longest serving community groups in Edlington and Doncaster.

Our building requires extensive work doing to it to enable us to continue to use the building for another 25 years. We have had quotes for the emergency works which come to over £5,000 plus VAT and we have been advised that for the whole building to be renovated we would be looking at in the region of £20,000.00 to £35,000.00. We are trying to raise some of the money ourselves but are also looking to obtain grants to help us fund the repairs.
