Weʼre raising £38,000 to help Miles with life prolonging treatment for the condition of Acute Myeloid Leukaemia

Story

Our wonderful 21 year old Son Miles was last year working hard to complete his degree and looking forward to a future in the film and media industry he loves , when out of the blue in December 2017 he was diagnosed with Acute Myeloid Leukaemia (AML) .

He has undergone a long journey of chemotherapy treatments, and has spent the majority of this time in hospital , however , despite these tough times, he has remained brave and optimistic throughout. In the Summer, things started to look more positive – he went into remission and a stem cell transplant was planned. However, regrettably, the leukaemia returned before the transplant could take place.

Since then, he has undergone further treatments of chemotherapy , all of which have been unsuccessful in getting him back into remission, and sadly the transplant was no longer an option and his condition was considered to be terminal.

Although all lines of conventional chemotherapy have now been exhausted, his medical consultant has identified that there is a further option of using a drug not available in this country for his condition, which although in its infancy for the treatment of AML - has been used in trials and has shown some real promise. It is hoped that at very least this may buy him some time, and it cannot be ruled out that there may be a chance of even getting him back to the point of remission so that he could try for a stem cell transplant again.

Unfortunately, this medication is not available on the NHS for the treatment of AML in this country and needs to be funded privately at a cost of over £6,000 per month. Other medication that is required to work alongside this has been funded in the short term – however, it is possible that this will also need to be funded privately in the future should Miles have the opportunity. Although it's difficult to predict the amount needed to be raised , we have set an initial target of £38,000 .However , depending how Miles responds to the medication ,or the possibility presents itself to take advantage of any further developments in the treatment of AML , we may need to review the target amount.

As parents, we are fighting to give our Son a chance to extend his life to give him the opportunity to do the things that are important to him. We are asking that if you can afford to donate or help in any way towards the cost of this treatment, together with any further expenses that are required to help Miles, your contributions would be greatly appreciated .

Thank you.

This donation is in lieu of a gift to celebrate the Diamond Anniversary of John and Beryl Kempson. They requested no gifts but donations could be made to good causes. Miles was our first thought.
