    Story

Julie Garwell has lived the last 10 years inside a nightmare.

Julie has endured years of heartache after losing two children and watching her grandchild undergo open heart surgery.

Julies son Christopher, was killed after being attacked in 2010 and then three years ago the family suffered another horrific blow when her 18-year-old daughter died shortly after giving birth – something that the grandmother to this day finds too upsetting to talk about.

As the family struggled to cope with their grief they then received the devastating news that baby Charlie had pulmonary atresia and needed to undergo a vital operation.

When he was one and a half, Charlie underwent a 12-hour surgery at Alder Hey Children’s Hospital but for a while it was “touch and go” whether he would make it.

Julie admits that it has been a traumatic time for the family but they are doing all they can to rebuild their lives.

She said: “In 2010 we lost my son Christopher and then we lost my daughter after Charlie was born so we’ve had to rebuild our lives which has been really difficult.

“It’s been a really traumatic time for us as a family and it is still difficult to this day.

“After Charlie’s operation it was very touch and go for a while but thank god he pulled through.

“He still gets a bit breathless from time to time but he’s getting there but you do worry about him all the time.”

Charlie is now a happy three-year-old but will need more surgery in the future.

I hope we can collectively help Julie and her family, show that humanity cares and would like to offer her the chance to purchase a wooden climbing frame and slide, I also hope, we can allow her to take her family on a little rest bite holiday to make some fantastic memories. What Julie has done after what she has gone through is phenominal, I’m not sure I would have had her strength.

I am a Football coach for Aston Park Rangers for 5 years and have met this family through the club. I I have known Cal since he was 7, So I knew then he had a tough time losing his brother, but then to be 8 and lose your big sister was such sucker punch.
