Story
Hillside Specialist School is a Specialist School for Communication and Interaction in Lancashire for students aged three to nineteen years with Autism Spectrum Disorder. Pupils take part in a wide ranging personalised curriculum. At Hillside Specialist School we have built an eclectic approach to pupils learning, taking into account current theories and methods of teaching. All of our pupils display significant difficulties within the ‘Triad of Impairment’ that is at the heart of the autism. A child’s difficulties in language and communication, social relationships, and rigid patterns of behaviour/thought/interests form major barriers to learning. Our role is to help our pupils to come to terms with, and overcome, these difficulties.
On 8th and 9th of August a small team of 4 Wesham Road runners will take on a 24 hour running challenge starting at midday on Saturday and finishing at midday on Sunday. This will involve on average 6 hours of running each over a 24 hour period. This was supposed to be during an event in Leeds called Endure24 but due to the coronavirus has been cancelled, so we decided to do it anyway from Kirkham Cricket Club to raise money to go towards a new sensory room for Hillside Specialist School and College.
The current sensory room at the school has been out of use for the last couple of years and it would be wonderful for our pupils to be able to access a brand new sensory room. Time in a sensory room helps children with Autism improve their visual, auditory and tactile processing, as well as fine and gross motor skills. By providing a sense of calm and comfort, sensory rooms help children with Autism learn to self-regulate their behaviours, which ultimately improves focus.
