Story
Investing in Girls Education in Africa (IGEA) is a registered not for profit organisation with a mission to advocate for investment into the quality education of girls in rural parts of Africa. We have started our operation in Ghana with our first project, ‘Menstruate and Educate’ in 2019. Within the first 3 months, we found girls in our project attendance at school increased by at least an extra 3 days per month, additionally reporting a higher level of confidence in the classroom.
We want to minimise any hindrance that may occur in the process of young girls receiving a quality education, and through our research, we found that 80% of girls from the ages of 11-16 in Northern Ghana period poverty is a leading cause for absenteeism. By distributing reusable, biodegradable sanitary napkins, we want to equip young girls to feel confident during menstruation. Our main goal is to reduce school absenteeism and increase well being in these communities.
We provide a two-fold solution that addresses social as well as environmental issues. Commercial sanitary napkins are expensive and harmful to the environment. With no substantial waste disposal methods, plastic sanitary napkins and can lie in the vicinity for years.
The reusable, biodegradable sanitary napkins distributed by IGEA along with a pair of knickers will equip a girl to feel period confident for up to two years at a cost of £10 per girl.
A £10 donation will purchase one reusable sanitary kit, and support our goal to ensure 500 girls no longer miss school due to period poverty in 2021.
