Story
On September 19th a devastating earthquake killed at least 250 people in Mexico. At least 69 were killed in the state of Morelos. Many people were living in remote communities on around the volcanoes close to Mexico City. So far they are not getting any assistance from the government. Many people are sleeping next to the ruins of their houses.
An emergency shelter is being built in Hueyapan and we need volunteers, tools and supplies to build the shelter along with food and medicines. This project is run by the Sahridaya community who have provided a refuge for volunteers to stay in in Tepoztlan.
Every donation counts here. This is a community run project so no money will be going to big charities. The aid is going straight to the local community which was badly affected by the earthquake but not receiving the international media coverage that Mexico City is.
This is a high altitude area of Mexico with extreme weather at times. It can get very cold and wet at times and people have been left without shelter, food and medical supplies.
Even if you sacrifice a £5 bottle of wine, it will be much appreciated as every little helps
HERE IS AN UPDATE FROM THE LADY HEADINNG UP THE RESCUE EFFORTS
Hi John, THANK YOU SO MUCH from the depths of our hearts. Incredibly quick summary is that we are just back from hueyapan, morelos where we spent the day assesing the situation and tomorrow we will issue a report at noon tepoztlán time
there is already overflowing of food supplies but there is lack of specialized medicines like those for diabetes; also, super super urgent is people to come and put their hands on the ground to help in removing fallen houses (around 500 in hue)
we are using currently all cash donations for gasoline and food for the convoys of volunteers, as well as hosting them, but more importantly, to buy the tools and the equipment for temporary shelters, this is an immediate need, because the people are sleeping next to the ruins fo their houses, most towns don´t have shelters yet and the ones that do , people don´t wanna go for fear of losing what little left they have... it´s rainy season... this is the most immediate need
my thought is to implment further deeper help in the coming weeks, asembling a brigade of love to bring, psichotherapists, yoga and meditation teachers, for post traumatic relief...
i was breastfeeding my 1 year old when it started. bricks started falling on us, i had to get up quickly run to the garden outside the house... it was so powerful... running to get my kids from school (they were fine), 3 hurs of total blackout of communications in the town, no wifi, no light, no 3g, no landlines, no mobile service at all, not knwing how it was in mx city where we have family or anywhere else, if itwas that strong here... so we are all recovering from the shock and now doing the best we can to reach those in need directly and asap
i didn´t see ONE ambulance today, one military convoy, one civil protection service, no one... it was all civilians driving their particular cars, some of them directly from costco bringing food to the towns...
not so quick summary
we´ll keep in touch thank you for being!!!!

7 years agoHi Everyone. Thanks so much for your donations. I spent a few days staying at the Sahridaya Refuge, which is run by Paul & Tara and helped on a few emergency relief projects. Paul & Tara are now working to a sustained longer term project. I hope to go back soon. We raised $17,300 pesos a lot of money in Mexico. This went to use immediately to pay for fuel to get donated supplies to rural areas. An emotional few days. No big charities or government help in sight. 100% volunteers who worked non stop. I am so happy we could help directly. Jx

7 years agoYesterday was a 15 hour day. Exhausting but so rewarding. We unloaded a lorry full of food, clothes and medicines and sent out the supplies to remote communities. Then we worked with the rescue team in Tepoztlan clearing a path through a land slide so people could access their houses. Gruelling work, but I have never worked with such hard working and dedicated people. Spirits were high amongst the volunteers but the locals were clearly worried and scared. Today will be more of the same.
