Story
Starting on Christmas morning, we will walk 253 miles from Leeds to Dover in solidarity with those currently attempting the perilous journey to Europe, and to be a voice for those who never made it.
Despite a lack of media attention, the refugee crisis is ongoing . Every day, 34,000 people around the world flee their homes to escape famine, poverty, and war . In 2018 alone, more than 100,000 people have risked their lives to reach Europe by sea (UNHCR)
There are currently more than 1000 refugees living in and around Calais. Their sleeping bags and possessions are often confiscated by the police. There are refugees camping in the woods and fields, many are families with small children.
Refugees are dependent upon and at the mercy of other people for food, medical care, financial aid, shelter, security.. the list of needs continues until all basic human requirements are fulfilled.
Our route will be as follows -
LEEDS -> CONISBROUGH 25/12
CONISBROUGH -> NEWARK-ON-TRENT 26/12
NEWARK-ON-TRENT -> OAKHAM 27/12
OAKHAM -> HUNTINGDON 28/12
HUNTINGDON -> THUNDRIDGE 29/12
THUNDRIDGE -> DARTFORD 30/12
DARTFORD -> CANTERBURY 31/12
CANTERBURY -> DOVER 01/01
From Dover, one of our party will continue to Calais to volunteer with HelpRefugees for three months. Help Refugees is a UK-based NGO which provides humanitarian aid to displaced people around the world.
We encourage anyone who would like to take part in any or all of the walk.

6 years agoOver Thursday 27th (day three) and Friday 28th (day four) we walked 50 miles through the most beautiful landscapes so far. The views were stunning though the hills didn't help our weary legs. As you can imagine, walking 107,880 steps in two days is going to cause a few issues. Saturday Ryan woke with a swollen ankle and blisters on both feet. Because we were behind anyway and getting progressively slower we thought it a good day to catch up, we got a train from Peterborough to London and gave ourselves a few extra hours rest and recovery.
