Weʼve raised £350 to Veterinary Support for Canine Auto-immune Disease

Funded on Wednesday, 27th November 2019

    Story

In November, I will be walking 25km over two days, to raise money for three veterinary centres who cared for my dog Roo. Roo suffered from canine auto-immune disease which is a life-limiting condition in dogs, managed by medication, but not cured. It takes various forms, some are thought to be carried genetically while others are brought on by trauma or triggered by other illness.

In the case of Roo, a handsome collie x hunterway, he picked up meningoencephalitis when he was 18 months old. This virus infection triggered the onset of the auto-immune disease. After his initial traumatic, near fatal illness, diagnosis, subsequent on-going medication and suffering the occasional flare-up, he none the less lived an energetic and happy three more years, until he died aged 4 ½.

I will be sharing the money raised, between my local veterinary clinic at Mainstone in Romsey where Roo was loved and cared for by all the staff since he was a puppy; the PDSA (on behalf of Southern Counties Veterinary Specialists in Ringwood who diagnosed Roo’s illness and saved his life in that first instance); and on behalf of Vetsnow Out of Hours veterinary clinic in Winchester, where Roo was cared for during his final hours, Pet Blood Bank Uk.

The walk will be a circuit from my home, taking in many of the favourite places I walked with Roo, including Broughton Down, Stockbridge Marsh, Stockbridge Down and Danebury Hillfort.

My dog's veterinary support was wonderful and all the vets involved over the years were so caring, right up to the very end. This fund-raising walk is to say a big 'thank you' to them all and to show my appreciation of their hard work and dedication, and in memory of my buddy, Roo. Fellow dog-owners and lovers, these specialist centres could benefit you all at some time, and more importantly of course, your beloved canine companions.

I hope to raise at least £100 for each cause (more if possible!) so please do give as much as you can and spread the word to all your dog-owning/loving friends.

    Thank you. Julia

Home is over that horizon, round about the middle, I stopped for coffee near that bonfire, I walked right across that landscape down in the tree-filled valley, then double backed to here, and it felt like a straight line!

Day one went very well, great weather, clear blue skies all the way but the air was cool and fresh. All in all, ideal conditions. for walking. To be honest, I haven't checked the distance, but I set off from home at 8.40am and arrived at The Peat Spade pub in Longstock, north of Stockbridge, at 3.45pm. I stopped en route only 3 times for coffee breaks and lunch! Can't wait for more tomorrow, although I don't think it'll be such a golden day, more grey and cloudy.

Getting ready for the off tomorrow, having fended off some kind of lurgy over the last few days, hoping I'll have the oomph required! The forecast looks dry though and I'm really looking forward to it. 10 month old puppy Nelly will join me for the first mile or so just to see me on my way. Only a few more ££ before I reach my target, so I'm doing a bit of a push on social media today (not my normal habitat!) I'm confident I'll get the £300 I hoped. Here's a picture of me and Roo on a sunny day a couple of years ago.

Well done Julia! what amazing photos of stunningly beautiful countryside. Sorry to hear about Roo. So sad when our pets reach the end of the road. We still miss our dog every day. 🤗

I live in the Test Valley with my husband, our teenage daughter, and our second dog, Nelly. I love walking and my excursions with Roo, who was an adventurous soul, enabled me to discover so much of our wonderful local landscape, I shall always be grateful to him for that.
