Middlewick range is a vast area of green space located on Abbots Road it has not been touched for hundreds of years save for the last 100 where it has been used by the MOD as a firing range and training ground. This land was once common land and was used by local people to graze their cattle on and more recently local people use this land to enjoy walking their dogs, go for bike rides, go for a run children play on this land it is well used by the community and this is being ignored by the local council . Also this land has vast amounts of history including Roman, Saxon and even before this time it has graded buildings and WWII bunkers on on this land as well as other historical artefacts not including what could be uncovered by archaeologists. It is home to many many protected species including newts, lizards, skylarks use this area to breed and this has been their home for many decades. Local people are sick of Colchester being concreted over by more and more housing and losing vital green space for those who live in the local area we need this space for our well being and quality of life as well as there not being any infrastructure to support this housing scheme that is planned for this land. Hospitals are already at bursting point as well as local surgeries schools and Colchester cannot withstand more cars on the road as the roads were not built for such traffic. Many people feel that they cannot do anything to prevent this from happening and this is simply not true we must stand together as a community and get our voice heard to do nothing is to be complicit to the plans of CBC. The government say the local council need to build approx 260 houses every year and this is the excuse why the land is being put up for sale well the truth is Colchester has gone well beyond these figures compared with other boroughs. Another fact to consider is MOD have many houses that are left unoccupied so why cant these houses be used to accommodate those who need houses, also there are many brown space areas that could be used for housing. We need this area of land to be protected for local people of which for hundreds of years have been common land for use by the community and for the many animals who would lose their home as a result of concreting over this precious land.
