Story
More than a third of us already are living with dementia, either as one of the 850,000 people currently diagnosed with the condition or as their family or friend. Dementia causes memory loss, confusion and problems with speech and understanding. Through smell, taste and touch, old memories can be reignited and, as trips out become more challenging, the tiniest patch of garden can take on a whole new purpose. Sensory Trust is a leading authority on inclusive and sensory design. They use nature and the outdoors to improve the health and wellbeing of people living with disability and health issues, their families and carers. Sensory Trust works throughout the UK, and shares its approaches internationally with a wide network of organisations and individuals. Working with Sensory Trust, I have designed the ‘Fascinating Haunts’ border which will be exhibited at Gardeners World Live at the NEC June 14-17th 2018 as part of the Beautiful Borders Competition. This ‘nostalgic’ garden aims to show that, even in a tiny space, you can provide people living with dementia the opportunity to sow some favourite seeds and, together, start a conversation around long-remembered scents such as Sweet Peas, Lemon Balm and Lavender. Or enjoy the pop of a Pea pod and the sweet taste of something that never made it as far as the kitchen! Easily copied, I hope, in a small way, the border will be a real source of connection and stimulation for many Gardeners World visitors. We will offer some of the plants for sale at the end of the event to raise money for Sensory Trust, but if you can't get there to buy a plant then donate here. All monies raised will go to Sensory Trust to help them do more of their vital work. Thank you so much for all your help.

I am a garden designer and horticulturalist with a garden design practice on the border of the Cotswolds. Gardens are an important source of wellbeing in an increasingly frantic world and I want to be able to demonstrate this through my work.
