    Story

A year ago Isabelle and Amelia decided to set up WaterWings

This club has given children with a diagnosis of a neurological condition access to hydrotherapy delivered by a qualified physiotherapist free of charge.

Over the last 12 months 15 children aged 6 months to 15yrs have received therapy. While the water supports much of the body weight, the resistance of the water helps to strengthen the muscles. The warmth increases circulation and also reduces muscle spasms and helps to relieve the pain. Many of these children find it difficult to access public pools because of the temperature of the water, noise or lack of disabled facilities suitable for their needs. WaterWings gives them the opportunity to not only access important therapy but to have fun with friends and enjoy the freedom the water gives them. Parents have reported not only the benefits to their muscles but also increased their child’s confidence and one mum said, “it’s the only time my son smiles”

The sessions are supported by both adult and teenage volunteers who all have experience of either working with or hve a family member with a disability. WaterWings relies on donations and fundraising to be able to offer this vital service. The only paid staff are the Lifeguard and Physiotherapist, plus we have to fund the cost of hiring the pool.We are now at a point where we only have enough funds to keep going until Christmas. If you feel you can donate a few pennies Isabelle and Amelia would be really grateful, they will both be taking part in the Westminster mile again in May to raise funds.

Thank you for taking time to read this.
