In the summer 2020, I have the opportunity to travel to Borneo with an organisation called Outlook Expeditions. During my 3 week program, I will assist a range of projects aiming to help the community tackle some of their on going problems. During previous years, Outlook Expeditions have completed projects such as building and decorating schools and refurbishing local community centres. We will also organise events in the villages where local children can come and join in with the activities. This event is typically used by 60 children and is a great way to learn about the island's culture and engage with new people.

During our expedition, we will camp and learn about survival in the rainforest. We will spend our time building traps, exploring wildlife and making shelters that we will camp out in. Each day we will be catering for our group using campfires and learning about traditional Quinine. During the trek we will climb Mount Kinabalu and visit local villages where we will assist farmers in harvesting their crops. Closing our trek we will attend the Orangutan Rehabilitation centre where we will enjoy close encounters with the animal themselves before travelling by boat to Kota Kinabalu.

During the final week of our trip, we will enjoy some activities such as scuba diving, forest trails and a dip in the warm sea for some well earned rest and relaxation. On the sandy beaches, we will enjoy games of beach volleyball encouraging the locals to join in too.

Earlier this year I was able to achieve my Bronze Duke of Edinburgh which taught me to work as part of a team and push myself to achieve my goal. I enjoyed this experience so much that I am hoping to do both my Silver and Gold in preparation for my Trip to Borneo. I have grown up on a farm therefore respect the hard work that farmers around the world put in to provide for their families. I am excited to see the differences between my life in Britain compared to Borneo and hopefully get my hands dirty.
