Story
In December 2015, my friend's son was diagnosed with Ewing's Sarcoma at just 20 years old. Long treatments meant he spent extended periods of time in and out of ward 34, the Cancer Care ward for Teenagers and Young Adults in the Freeman Hospital. He even celebrated his 21st birthday in the ward - not where you envisage turning 21! All in ward 34, he had 9 rounds of chemo, a femur replacement, then 5 further rounds of chemo. Sadly, he was re-diagnosed in July 2017 with it back on his lungs - chemo on going...
Throughout this time, the hospital went above and beyond to provide the most pleasant experience possible for him and his family. They have wonderfully decorated rooms to feel more like bedrooms than hospital rooms, flatscreen TVs, wifi, computers, a pool table, which are all free to use so families aren't out of pocket. They have days rooms for parents with tea and coffee, kitchens, and organise events e.g. live music and smoothie making. All these little things really help to make life a little easier for patients and families taking on this bloody awful disease. My friend's son, along with many others, too many(!), continue their battle against Cancer everyday.
So, what are we going to do for your money...To support the ward in maintaining their high standards of care, we have decided to take on the 3 peaks challenge (Ben Nevis, Scafell Pike and Snowdon) in just 24 hours. Eek!
Please donate to our page and your money will go towards improving the lives of all those admitted to the ward. Even better ALL MONEY DONATED WILL BE MATCHED BY BARCLAYS BANK! So, they get double for your dollar.
The plan (if you're interested)...On Friday 22nd June we will drive to the start of Ben Nevis after work, picking Tim up from Edinburgh airport en route. We hope to start the first hike at 9pm (head torches at the ready). We will then drive through the night to Scafell Pike, hoping to start hiking around 8am. Then set straight back on the road to Snowdon to (fingers crossed) begin hiking at 5pm to reach the peak with 24 hours.
If anyone fancies driving for us, give us a shout. You will be rewarded with sweaty hugs, beers and burgers at the bottom.
Dig deep and wish us luck - we're going to need it!
