Story
PEMBA ISLAND is part of the Zanzibar Archipelago, lying off the Eastern Coast of Tanzani, Africa. Covering an area of less than 1000 square kilometres and a population of about half a million inhabitants. Outside the main towns, families live in small villages with poor electricity supplies, overcrowded homes, limited water supplies, (often from common wells or village stand-pipes) and no proper sanitation.
Many of the locals worked for the hotels but since COVID_19 the hotels have closed and at present look likely to remain closed for at least one year. With no other employment opportunities in the area and no social support these families can only look forward to a bleak, and hungary future. We need to ensure that they can survive until the hotels reopen.
Working with a local hotel, who have provided 2.5 hectares of hotel land, we are helping the community to build a self-help farm. Here they can grow the basic vegetables and fruits to survive until the world is back to normal and the hotels reopen. Currently we anticipate this will take one year.
For seven months of the year there is little rain. Pemba has a deficit of ground water so we need to invest in a water irrigation and storage system costing £2000, manual farm equipment £500 and crops and supplements £500.
And we need to do so now. Every day it takes is another day the men their wives, their children and the older generation are being deprived of essential foods required for survival.
Please spare some change to support our cause and know that your donation, no matter how small, will allow this small community to grow foor for the families who otherwise suffer slow starvation.
We thank you in advance for your support.

4 years agoThanks to everyone who has contributed to our appeal. We are now entering Phase 2. We are purchasing 3000 locally made face masks for distribution to the local villages. We are also buying 16 temperature sensors for local health centres, police stations etc. where they are sadly missing. The cost of this phase is estimated to be about £2,400 We are not there yet! Please help these poor communities to fight off the global pandemic, they have little funding and little support.

4 years agoThank you very much all of you who have contributed so far. To date Kwanini Foundation has visted 15 villages in the North of Pemba Island, educating the locals on COVID-19. We took this opportunity to provide local made soap and locally purchased buckets and taps so that the villagers can collect water and wash their hands, not as often as we would like, but certainly more often than normal! We also started a media campaign which was broadcast on Zanzibar TV and a Tanzanian channel in Dar es Salem. This exercise cost about £1400.00

4 years agoA happy scene? But for how long? These children and their families are still blissfully unaware of the perils heading their way. Without media coverage they do not understand the impact that COVID-19 has had on so many people world-wide. Without external support they have no chance of preparing or fighting the virus. Please help us to help them. We have already provided 15 villages with information leaflets, soap, and water collection points. But that is clearly not enough and they desperately need your support.
