Story
After my devastating post-operative cerebral spasm in 2013, I was left brain damaged and permanently disabled. I was three months in hospital, including six weeks of rehabilitation in Tonbridge Cottage Hospital.
Six years after that challenging time, I wrote down my experiences and compared them with dementia. My book, "Losing My Mind - Insider knowledge to understand dementia" was published in April 2021. It is , simply, a guide book for caring for dementia sufferers. it's aimed at struggling relatives caring for dementia sufferers but it's an essential help for professional carers and other health professionals too. It's an easy read - it's short and to the point. The serious nature of the topic is made lighter by my self-mocking humour and my daughter's fabulous illustrations.
To celebrate my publishing day, I started a £5,000 fundraiser to support the local community hospital as I noticed it was careworn and badly needed renovations. This cottage hospital is vital to the local community - as well as rehabilitation after brain injury (including strokes and bleeds), it provides an out of hour service supporting local GPs, an outpatients physio clinic, several hip and knee replacement recovery beds and some respite beds.
Rehabilitation is vital for brain injury patients - they provide physiotherapy, occupational therapy and speech & language support too. This is essential for the patient's future quality of life.
This is my second fundraiser page for the Hospital - I raised £3,360 last time and I need the extra £ 1,640 to meet my target of £5,000. Please make it happen.
Many thanks,
Laura
