Story
Classrooms for Kenya was established in 2006 by teachers and students at The Weald School, West Sussex. After visiting the country they were shocked by the standard of the buildings many children were learning in. These buildings were commonly made from mud and expected to collapse within a few years of construction but they were simply the only buildings the Kenyan schools could afford to build.
The charity was set up to help by raising the funds to build permanent classrooms between different schools in western Kenya and to send Sixth Form students to help build these rooms. The new, permanent classrooms that have been built are giving children in Kenya the opportunity to learn in a safe, non-crowded environment
I am joining a group of students and teachers from The Weald to travel to Kenya to build new classrooms for some of the local schools.
We will be away for 19 days and in this time we will not only be building the classrooms but we will be helping to teach the students who are all so keen to learn. We hope also to visit a local orphanage.
I expect that this will be one of the most challenging things I will ever do and I am sure that it will change me as a person, but I am really looking forward to the experience.
I had every intention of fund raising by running a 10km, however I ended up injuring myself so that is no longer an option. I now plan to walk from Southwater to Cranleigh, which is 18.7km. I shall be doing this alone but some of my family members will meet me along the route for some support and hopefully snacks!
I plan to do this walk on Saturday 19th May, fingers crossed that the weather will be kind!
If you would like to donate to this cause I would be very grateful.
Thank you,
Lewis
