Story
SUDDEN CARDIAC ARREST STRIKES WITHOUT WARNING. IT KNOWS NO BOUNDARIES, CLAIMING HUNDREDS OF THOUSANDS OF LIVES AROUND THE WORLD EVERY YEAR. PEOPLE OF ALL AGES, RACE, FITNESS LEVELS AND WALKS OF LIFE SUCCUMB TO IT AND MOST DON’T SURVIVE
HOWEVER, THERE IS HOPE - DEFIBRILLATION.
I live in Ibstock, Leicestershire and on 11th June will swim 3 miles in Windermere, Lake District. I hope to raise enough money to buy two defibrillators for our village.
I have been training for this epic swim in water as cold as 9 degrees to condition my body and mind since January, I have 2 hours to complete the 3 mile course. So far I'm just about hitting my target time. But the is no rest in sight just yet. I swim train 3 times per week, both in pools and open water and run 12 miles per week as cross training.
We have a large population of elderly and children (although SCA is not age discriminant) and these life saving devices (AED's) are a necessary tool for any close community.
I am aware of someone in my close that has Cardiomyopathy and the thought that the ONLY thing that would save her if her heart does stop is a defibrillator drives me to raise awareness and the necessary funds to provide our village with as many defibrillators as I can.
I would be so grateful if you could see this as a worthwhile cause to give as much as you can, knowing that you could save the life of one of my community.
many thanks for reading and supporting - Lisa MacKenzie ;)

7 years agoThanks so much to those who have donated. For those who have not, I just wanted to let you know that unfortunately due to exceptionally high winds predicted on the day of my swim Great Swim cancelled the event. As you can imagine I am extremely upset about this but as they said "safety comes first" I intend to swim the distance without the support of Great Swim later on in the year. However, this will depend on whether I am able to get a safety crew. Please do continue with your donation I'm still passionate about this cause.

7 years agoThe day after my Sprint Triathlon in Nottingham my team mate and I braved the, now 14° Water of Stanton Lakes to time our selves for 5 laps. After the 3.5km we disappointedly realised that we will be far too close to the 2 hour cut-off time to be comfortable sticking to that pace. So, it's back to the pace and technique drawing board to see if we can find an extra 0.3 of a kilometre. Which will bring us in at approximately 1 hour 47 minutes. Watch this space im back in the lake again on Sunday.

Knowing that someone close to you has a heart problem that could literally end their life at anytime, or even if you don't, knowing that it could be you one day should be enough for everyone to just give as much as they can. The price of a beer, a choc bar or a lottery ticket?
