Story
I am going to swim a mile on Friday 6th January 2017 at the Tandridge Leisure Pool in Oxted, Surrey. The project is called Swim for Lizzie; she has been a swimming teacher at Tandridge Leisure Centre for 16 years.
On 25th August 2015 Lizzie was diagnosed with terminal cancer. Over the past few months she has been supported by the teams at St Luke's East Surrey, the specialised nursing staff at St Luke's Guildford and her oncologist. Currently people are having to travel to St. Luke's at Guildford Hospital which is another added stress factor when you are ill. East Surrey Hospital, together with Macmillan, are currently raising funds to build a new centre to provide more accessible treatment for cancer. Eventually, the aim is to provide chemotherapy at East Surrey.
This really matters to me, as I know it does to everyone who has friends and family members who have needed treatment for cancer.

I retired from a 32-year career in teaching in 2009 and worked part-time for the library service until 2014. I have always liked to swim but since I retired I have used the pool regularly twice a week. It is an activity which gives structure to my week and makes me feel alive.
