Story
It is estimated that 1 in 10 adults in this country will have some form of dyslexia. Many struggled in school and continue to struggle in everyday life as today's society expects everyone to reach the same level of qualifications in order to find employment. This is impossible for many, who struggle to keep up with mainstream education and the result is, often, mental health issues.
The groups, 'Managing Dyslexia', give these adults the opportunity to improve their English skills in a safe environment, where they can work at their own speed and their abilities are nurtured and developed. They are also given the opportunity to develop coping strategies to deal with their disability thus enabling them to stay well. Peer support forms a major part of the groups, as the learners develop confidence in their own ability and encourage others to deal with this hidden disability.
The groups are currently self funded with learners paying a minimum amount each to fund the specialist tuition. Library services have kindly donated an area in their libraries for the classes to take place. Unfortunately many of the learners are currently unemployed and may be unfit to work but are desperate to learn. They live from week to week on benefits and don't always have the money to keep up the weekly classes.
It is vital for those with dyslexia to attend classes regularly as they have very poor short term memories and regular repetition is needed if they are to progress.
We are asking for funding simply to pay for someone to attend a class on a week when they can't afford it. To fund an adult for one 2 hour session we are simply asking for £5.00.
Your kind donation will keep someone in the Managing Dyslexia weekly programme and enable them to progress their skills, develop coping strategies and stay well.
