Story
LE JOG ADVENTURE
Mike (age 67) and his friend Pete are repeating one of their epic cycle rides from Lands End to John O'Groats in June of this year. This is an unsupported ride i.e. they are carrying all that they need with them for 2 weeks in their bike panniers - no support vehicle. The distance is just short of 1,000 miles. Mike, being a past Mayor of Fareham himself, has chosen to support Cllr Susan Bayford Mayor of Fareham 2018/2019 by raising as much as he can in support of her charities and is hoping that friends and family will support him in his effort. Susan's nominated charities are:
Abby's Heroes; Acts of Kindness (Solent); Royal Navy Benevolent Trust
Abby’s Heroes In 2013, aged 8 years and 10 months Abby was diagnosed with Ewings Sarcoma, a rare type of bone cancer. During her fight, Abby underwent 23 rounds of chemotherapy, 50 days of radiotherapy, stem cell harvestry, scans, surgery and many other invasive procedures. After a period of remission, Abby’s cancer returned and she lost her battle for life on 29 May 2016. The aim of Abby’s Heroes charity is to help and support children and their families, including bereaved families, who come under the care of the Piam Brown Ward at Southampton General Hospital. The charity also supports the Teenage and Young Adults Ward. This means that children and young people from the age of 0 to 24 who come from across the south, are supported by this wonderful charity.
Acts of Kindness Solent Acts of Kindness aims to relieve the effects of poverty, provide support to the vulnerable and recognise those in the community who have served beyond expectation. Through community support and strong partnership AOK will provide food, clothing and household items to those in need and will co-ordinate support of community projects. AOK can collectively make a difference to people’s lives by utilising the skills and expertise of the community,
Royal Naval Benevolent Trust The Royal Naval Benevolent Trust (RNBT) gives help in cases of need to serving or former Royal Naval Ratings and Royal Marines other ranks, which includes reservists. The RNBT also helps partners, children and some others connected with them. Beneficiaries are known collectively as The RNBT Family. The vision is “For the RNBT Family to receive the support necessary to alleviate hardship and to live with dignity”. The RNBT makes grants to meet a wide range of needs including food, clothing, rent, home repairs, medical needs, respite breaks, mobility aids and much more. Last year 2,906 cases were helped.

6 years agoLEJOG adventure begins. Mike and Pete left for Exeter this morning (by car) where they will pick up a train to Penzance. They have around a 10 mile cycle ride this evening to the “youth hostel” at Lands End. Tomorrow the hard work really begins. Will be doing a daily update on miles covered and any “issues”. Thank you to everyone who has contributed to date to these excellent causes. I pray they both stay safe x❤️
