    Story

Seametrey Children's Village is a Montessori school in Tonle Bati, 30km South of Phnom Penh, Cambodia. It was founded in 2003 by Muoy You, and there are currently 180 students who attend free of charge or for a nominal fee.

In 2012, the University of Leeds set up a contract with Seametrey Children's Village, and sent a team of 10 volunteers to the school. During this first trip, students helped to construct the school itself.

Now, five years later, the University are sending their fifth team to the School. During July and August, we will be running a summer school for the children who have little other entertainment during the long summer break. Lessons will include teaching English, French, Spanish, music and sports.

For me, the project is also important in a wider context because the school aims to help fight the systematic corruption in Cambodia by offering education and leisure facilities to those who otherwise may be unable to afford it. Supporting this school therefore also means supporting the challenge to the exclusionary system in place that it represents.

Ultimately, Seametrey Children's Village hopes to run as a financially self-sufficient entity. Until that day, the school relies on the funds raised by the University of Leeds volunteers. For this reason we are each hoping to raise £900 to support the school, both for maintenance and the construction of new facilities which will help to bring the end goal of self-sufficiency much closer.

Please consider giving to this cause to help the school continue to grow!
