Story
Hi Everyone,
We are planning a trip(fully self funded) in April to go and volunteer for 8 days at Chios (GR) to try and help the refugees arriving and currently staying in camps there.
Even though we do not see many news about refugees arriving in boats in the media these days, boats are still arriving in Chios every week. In January alone 800 refugees have arrived in Chios. The conditions in the camps are not good at all. It is cold, dirty and there is no electricity. Not one of us would ever hope to have to live like this.
Every single penny you donate will go directly to the refugees.
They are in need of clothes, shoes, hygiene products and so much more. We are planning to not take any items with us so that we can spend the money raised in Chios, once we know what the immediate needs of the refugees are, as we have been advised by the charity to do.
Spending the money in Greece is also extremely beneficial for the economy of the island instead of sending clothes by post. The refugee crisis has had a huge impact on the tourism in Chios. When Annemarie went to Chios last year, she really saw how useful it was to have funding to spend on the refugees (something more than a smile or hug and to help the local economy).
If we have money left over when we leave Chios, we will donate it to one of the organizations that provide help for the refugees in Chios!
Myself and Annemarie we met 4 years ago when we started to work together at Cisco, even though in two different countries we became good friends and since we share the same passion we decided to join forces and do this trip together. Upon arrival at Chios we will continue to update this page with pictures and short blogs about our experiences on the island and reports on where/how the money is being spent on the refugees.
Thank you for reading and thank you for trying to help our cause.
Much love,
Myro & Annemarie
