Dorset CCG are planning changes to the the NHS in Dorset which will involve: moving Poole Maternity to Bournemouth, moving the major A and E from Poole to Bournemouth, potentially moving the children's and maternity consultant led and overnight care from Dorchester to Yeovil or Bournemouth and the closure of some community hospitals.
These changes matter because thousands of people will struggle to travel to Bournemouth which is surrounded by congested roads (which means that lives may be lost in transit) and because many residents in rural Dorset have no access to public transport to travel the greater distances involved.
Over 10% of Dorset's population have signed petitions opposing these cuts. The consultation published by the CCG used evidence based on surveys of less than 2.5% of the population to justify their decision.
Dorset Healthwatch have raised questions about the consultation saying:
There is clinical evidence that people will benefit from improved outcomes if some services are centralised. But the reality is that if people cannot get to those services (for example, because of transport difficulties) or cannot get there in time, they will not get the benefits. The CCG has quoted “traffic data” to show how long it takes to travel from one part of the county to another. Very many people feel that the “data” does not reflect the reality of their own experiences of travelling around the county.
We are trying to raise money for Leigh Day Barristers (specialists in judicial reviews of public service cuts and reforms) to undertake an initial assessment of the consultation process. We have plenty of evidence of problems with the consultation and have already raised over £900 for the review. We're asking people to donate £10,£20 or £30 to help us raise the £600 we still need.
Please give generously to help protect locally accessible healthcare in Dorset
