This summer I am fortunate to have the opportunity to stay in a Fijian village, volunteering at a local school with a group of students. You may be thinking 'why Fiji?" and "isn't that a paradise-like holiday destination?". Fiji is indeed a beautiful island and the destination for many luxury holidays however around 1/3rd of the population live in poverty. Less that 5% of children attend pre-school and villages only have basic sanitation and education. Extra-curricular activities are not standard in Fiji like they are in the UK however Think Pacific work with the government and villages in Fiji to give these children an opportunity to take part in sports, singing, arts and drama to enhance their lives and that of their community. Since Think Pacific began, school attendance has increased by 40% and there has been a huge 600% increase in sporting activities, making it pretty clear how important the work Think Pacific does is! The money I am raising goes directly into the villages so don't worry I'm not asking you to pay me to go on the trip of a lifetime! I’m simply asking for a small donation toward the project fees in order to allow the amazing work Think Pacific do to continue. If you like the sound of what I’m doing but you want me to work a bit harder for your hard earned cash; this January I have gone without alcohol, cheese and my beloved makeup (three luxuries that won’t be available in Fiji) which is difficult to do at university! The conditions we will be living in for a month will be very basic as this is no ordinary volunteer trip! I know I have 400ish friends out there on Facebook so if each of you donated just a small amount you'd be doing your bit to inspire Fijian children, improve job prospects, empower and educate women, install water systems and enhance the lives of the lovely Fijian communities.
