    Story

We're in the midst of a worldwide crisis, and that is how we cater for the 22.5 million people that are refugees and have been forced to flee their homes. Some have lost family through conflict and some have been separated in the quest to find a home where they can be free from persecution and fear. Simple things such as providing food and shelter takes a lot of resource and help from charities and volunteers, we also want to help refugees and their children with language skills, to help open doors for their futures, and make it easier to communicate in the most distressing time of their life when they need help the most. We've all seen the stories of hundreds of people dying trying to flee to safety. It's amazing that so many people don't seem to care that we have a big world to share, yet refugees are stuck in makeshift camps with nowhere to call home and they are dying to try and find safety for their families while many turn a blind eye.

I watched a BBC documentary recently called Exodus: Our journey to Europe. It really opened my eyes to the lives of refugees and I decided I wanted to help in some way. Volunteering is something I've always wanted to do, but never known how to approach it. Not only will it have a huge impact on me as a person, it will have an impact on the lives of those I can help get food to and help with speaking English.

Greece sees more than 200 vulnerable people arrive every day with over 40% of those people being children. Despite a pledge by EU member states in September 2015 to relocate 160,000 asylum seekers – including 106,000 from Greece and Italy – a mere 29,000 have been moved to other European countries so far. There is a growing strain on the Greek islands which is why I have chosen to volunteer here. Without volunteers, these refugee camps would not exist and could not function.

Every action makes a difference. Please help me to make a difference to the lives of refugees.

So here goes! I'm trying to raise money as I will be volunteering at a refugee camp for a week next year. It's my first time raising money or volunteering internationally so I'm excited! But I need everyones help to get me there and to have money to donate. Please use your christmas generosity to donate and share the love :) If you don't feel anything about refugees, watch the BBC documentary - Exodus: Our journey to Europe, and listen to the stories of the refugees and what they have to go through just to be safe.

I work for a social enterprise that helps charities online. This work has opened my eyes to how hard charities and volunteers work for a number of causes. In my opinion it's a basic human right for people to be safe, free from persecution and have food, water and shelter.
