Story
There are too many stories of animal neglect. On Saturday June 3, such a case got personal. Gary and I were at Houston's Bill Archer Dog Park which we frequent often with our two fur babies. As we were about to leave, we bumped into a number of dog parents at the entrance conversing with a police officer. A distressed dog had been dumped in the park with no ID. We enquired what would happen to him. If he wasn’t picked up within the hour, the officer would take him to the city's pound. Given how he looked, it was highly likely he would go unclaimed and be destroyed. There was no way we could let that happen. It was an easy decision - he's coming home with us and we're becoming foster parents for the first time. Scooby (that's what we've called him) was clearly traumatized by the day's events, and it took us a lot of gentle coaxing to get him out of there. Our dogs were very gracious giving him all the space he needed in the back of our Jeep. Our wonderful vet Dr. Stephen K. Chmaitelli at River Oaks Veterinary Clinic examined him at short notice. The prognosis wasn't great - a severe case of both heartworm and mange. He also needed a number of other medications, including a rabies shot, antibiotics, cleansing shampoo (he has to get a bath every three days and he's not a big fan!) and tapeworm to name a few. Both the mange and heartworm are very treatable. He's already started on the first of eight weekly doses to clear the mange which covers at least 50% of his body. His treatment plan is expensive, but not as much as it should be thanks to our vet's generosity. We plan to foster him until he is well enough to find his forever family. We have set up this page to help cover the cost of his treatment. Scooby is such a brave wee boy and deserves a second chance. He's so sweet natured and will be a fantastic addition to anyone's family. Please consider donating to Scooby's treatment and giving him that chance in life he so richly deserves. Thank you Nicola & Gary

7 years agoJune 14 update: Scooby went on his first outing, aside from the dog park, on Sunday. We went for lunch with Kevin and Jess and met up with their Puggle Audrey and their Staffie Stella. Scooby is a very sociable dog albeit he's not at the front of the pack. He watches and mimics the other dogs - at one point all five dogs took it in turn to make a hole bigger! This picture sums up his demeanor right now - I'm still not sure but I'm over here! This dog continues to melt me and capture my heart. Please consider donating. Thank you, Nicola ❤️🐾

7 years agoJune 13: A thousand reasons (and more) to be thankful. Yes, we've crashed through the $1,000 barrier - an absolutely amazing achievement. I'm overwhelmed. A big thank you from the bottom of my heart to all of those wonderful people who have taken the time to read his story and donated to his cause. Raising awareness and having those conversations about how we will not tolerate animal neglect and cruelty is so important. Please share Scooby's story on social media, and consider donating. Thank you for support. I'm truly humbled. Nicola <3

7 years agoJune 12: Scooby has been with us for 10 days now. He, like any other dog, loves going to the dog park to walk, meet new fur friends and hang out with me and my pack. Given the spread of mange over his body, I have to bathe Scooby every three days. I have yet to own a dog that loves bath time! While bathing Scooby, he pulls a face as if I'm treating him really badly. My two dogs stay close by - it takes 15 minutes to bathe him - and it seems to help a lot (especially when my dogs get wet) Please consider making a donation. Thanks, Nicola

I'm passionate about all I do. I'm an avid animal lover and have two fur babies of my own, a great dane rescue (Thunder) and a choclolate labrador (Ozzy). No animal should ever have to suffer abuse or neglect and we have a responsibility to protect the vulnerable & those at risk.
