Story
We believe that education is key, but we also know that education can't be empowering without adequate facilities. On Sal Island, Cabo Verde sadly there is very little which could be described as "adequate" and we're not sure how anyone can concentrate in school at all, particularly at OMCV.
OMCV is a kindergarten in Espargos and the majority of the children that attend come from the slum area nearby to the school and are lucky to get one good meal each day, with the average family size being above 5. Most of the resources at OMCV have been donated or handmade; even the chairs are in such disrepair the children are forced to sit on the concrete floor. And technology? Forget it. Electricity is even a struggle, with bare wires everywhere.
Would you be able to learn in an environment like this?
We know we wouldn't. It's extremely dangerous, particularly for children, and it's worth noting most hospitals aren't even open 9 to 5 due to short staff. We haven't even mentioned the state of the "playground", where the only soft area is a sand pit which becomes too hot to touch by midday!
*Your donations will change their future!*
Together, we can help to change things for OMCV. Every single penny of the money we raise on this page will go towards repairing OMCV and making it safe for the children. The repair also means new equipment and resources, which are very valuable in Cape Verde, can be kept safely and securely.
On top of this, we'll build a kitchen. The kitchen is vital as it means that the government would help to fund meals for the students, which they will not do if schools don't have adequate preparation facilities.
Although separately this work may not seem to directly impact the education at OMCV, we believe combined it has the potential to transform the school and unlock a deeper level of learning. It will give parents peace of mind and increase prospects for families, in a place where a large majority of adults cannot read or write.

7 years agoWe've reached the end of this crowdfunding campaign, not quite at the target we'd hoped but nonetheless we have managed to reach our goal. The kitchen at OMCV is now nearly built, in part thanks to your support here! As a small charity, every single penny we raise counts and this project was about more than just a kitchen. It's built trust, changed lives and demonstrated what's possible! Thank you so much for being a part of that and we look forward to your continued support. Please keep an eye out for our new website, coming soon!

7 years agoThanks to the generosity of offline supporters and of course everyone who has donated so far here, we're proud to announce that work is well underway on the kitchen but there is still a lot of work to be done to make the school safe, let alone adequate! Please do make this final week of crowdfunding count!
