    Story

Mwanamke Jiamini Project – Menstrual Hygiene Management

Despite menstruation being a natural process, yet it is still treated as a taboo in several cultures and societies across Africa. These trends has created a lot of stigma, low self-esteem, and silence among young girls, often continues into adulthood and perpetuates the cycle of female having less contribution to their community and families.

The baseline survey by TAYONEHO in 2014 in Lake zone district of Tanzania, revealed that; 43% of school girls miss classes ranging from 2 to 7 days monthly during their menstrual cycle and about 18% dropout completely due to inability to access sanitary pads which is mostly caused by financial challenges, cultural believes and stigma.
This means that over 43% of girls miss schools from about 46 – 84 days in a year. From WHO research, there is a possibility of girls dropping out of school after missing at least two school days in a month. We can see that in lake zone district over 43% of girls will possible drop out of school every year.

TAYONEHO is implementing Menstrual Hygiene Management project Tagged “Mwanamke Jiamini” (which means women confidence) in 10 schools in lake zone of Tanzania to improve girls’ confidence, learning environment and free distribution of washable sanitary pad which is more sustainable and very accessible to low income families in the rural communities of Tanzania
The project is aimed at addressing the issue of sanitation, menstrual hygiene and provision free washable and reusable sanitary pads to 5,000 schoolgirls and marginalized women in the community.

Through the Menstrual Hygiene Management Project, we want to Build confidence in 5000 girls so that they will feel safe and free during their menstrual cycle, improve learning environment, increase their school performance and provide free washable and reusable sanitary pad to 5000 girls in 10 schools
