THE CHALLENGE!

We need to install 10 Public-Access Defibrillators (PADs) in West Glamorgan. Each PAD costs approximately £650 each.

Importantly, we also need to finance an awareness campaign to give confidence to people to use these fully automatic PADs.

Why do we need PADs?

Immediate defibrillation can be the difference between a life lost or saved.

Heart disease is one of the UK’s greatest killers; it is estimated that more than 60,000 sudden cardiac arrests take place each year outside of a hospital.

Location is Key

Defibrillators have the potential to assume a role similar to that of the fire extinguisher – omnipresent and ready in case of emergency.

Although the deployment of defibrillators is becoming more widespread, they are not as prevalent as you might think.

It is estimated that we need an additional 10 PADs throughout West Glamorgan that are accessible 24 hours per day.

A person's chance of survival falls by about 10% for each minute that passes without defibrillation. In West Glamorgan about 65% of Red (life threatening) calls are responded to within 7 minutes and 95% within 17 minutes.

Sadly, therefore, the chances of survival are very poor for someone with a sudden cardiac arrest. In Wales it is estimated to be about 3% whereas in some European countries it is as high as 50%.
