STORY

Following recent events on a Scuba School dive trip at Berry Head Brixham, where our club became involved in the rescue and life support of a diver (not from our club), we are raising funds to have a defibrillator on the Scuba School van so it is always available on all trips. Our club members were first on the scene with an emergency bag and oxygen having got the diver out of the water. Club members started CPR while we were waiting for the emergency services. When the emergency services arrived a defibrillator was applied and doctors secured an airway while our members continued chest compressions. Despite our best efforts from club members, other members of the public on the scene, paramedics, a doctor, RNLI and air ambulance, we were unable to save the life of the diver.

It is well established that the speed of intervention is the corner stone to survival to an out of hospital cardiac arrest. Defibrillators will increase the likelihood of survival and hopefully save a life. Once the target is reached Scuba School will work alongside club members to offer training in the use of the defibrillator.
