Story
Montgomeryshire Youth Theatre (Charity No 516040) is a Welshpool based charity which has been in operation since 1983. We provide a safe, creative environment for children of all abilities aged 8 to 21, and we are looking for a permanent home. Our aim is to expand the services we offer to include more opportunities and pastoral care for young people in the area - including a drop in facility and the opportunity to become involved with backstage activities and learning new skills. During its life MYT has helped many, many young people to pursue their dreams, as well as teaching important and valuable life-skills, such as self-confidence and self- esteem.
Welshpool Social Club sadly have to sell the building which was purpose built for use by the community in the early 1960s. We wantto buy the building and turn it into a centre that is accessible to many and varied groups in the locality. It would be run professionally and democratically by very experienced professionals- and would provide space and facilities to be used by other charities (such as Play Montgomeryshire and Ponthafren Association) that cater for the less fortunate in our society - as well as local businesses and organisations who provide creative, health and wellbeing opportunities for our community.
With drastic cuts in Local Authority funding there is now very scant provision of youth clubs, after school clubs, childcare and social and educational opportunities - and this building is absolutely ideal to provide a community based centre. Not only would it provide a fantastic home for the Youth Theatre (it has a stage, dressing rooms, commercial kitchen, bar and lots of storage space for costumes and sets), but it can be used and enjoyed by the whole community for which it was intended.
This building will be going to auction SOON, and we are determined to find a way to keep it for the benefit of our community. If you can, please help us by donating towards our cause.

8 years agoWe are very disappointed to tell all our supporters that we will be unable to go ahead with our plan to buy Welshpool Social Club building, following the results of the structural survey. Although we had a private investor who was keen to purchase the building and rent it out to us, and having invested £550 in a comprehensive structural survey, it became apparent that the project is not viable for us as it would cost too much to make the building usable. All money donated has been used to pay for the survey and the sustainability of MYT :)
