    Story

    Pete Lee’s “Five – 4 – Five” Challenge

In aid of Leighton Hospital’s Critical Care Unit

    The Story

On the morning of 15th November 2014, Helen Walker (My Grandma) was found unconscious at the family home and admitted to Leighton hospital. Having been admitted to the hospital, there were no beds readily available, so she was being monitored and tended to in the corridor. A nurse from the critical care unit was passing by, and persisted to have Helen moved to the critical care unit right there and then! Had this nurse not persisted to have Helen rushed to the Critical Care Unit, she wouldn’t have had the full and rapid diagnosis of having both Meningitis and Septicaemia. At the age of 74 the odds of recovery were not in Grandma’s favour at all. Had it not been for the speed of admission and diagnosis to the critical unit, she would never have recovered as fully as she has. She spent thirty days in the critical care unit, for which she was tended to night and day, with routine half hourly checks made. She had more wires, screens, and sensors around or attached to her than you would find in Curry’s PC World!

Our Family is truly indebted to the technology in the critical care unit. But most of all, we owe the nursing staff of the critical care unit for their: dedication, expertise and kindness for giving us more time with our Grandma.

    Five events - 4 - Five Grand

Sunday 16th July 2017 I went to support (Pit Crew) a triathlon event, which was the first one I had ever been to. It was right there and then that I decided that I wanted to compete myself, for varying reasons such as: competition, personal achievement, and because of the fun of it. After further thought, I believe that I can do a lot more for a cause close to my heart. I intend to do this by giving somebody else the same chance, or time, with their loved one as my family has been blessed with.

I intend on competing and completing a number of physical challenges across the nation, in order to raise a minimum of £5000.00 over the next 12 months.
