Story
The idea of a community centre was voiced during the last war and post war years when a small number of residents met to play cards or chat over afternoon tea etc. At one time they used a small allotment shed until metal railings were removed for the war effort and eventually flats built on the land. Small group would represent residents issues and try to help others in the area. In 1968 they campaigned for a piece of allotment land on which to build a Community Centre. Six years of campaigning brought this to fruition in 1974. With limited funds a prefabricated building was established with a life expectancy of eight to ten years. In the early years the centre hosted baby clinics, mother & toddler clubs, ladies group, darts team etc. Despite a checkered history and sometimes a lack of volunteers it has survived for 42yrs. Understandably the fabric of the building is in a poor state repair. It is used by children and adults aged 3yrs to 90yrs and by a wide section of our community providing a safe environment to meet. It is run on a self-supporting, non-profit making, voluntary basis and works for our community. Activities include: Ladies Club, Chines brush painting, English lessons, Dance for all ages, Quiz nights, Muslim ladies group, Emmanuel church of God, Tolworth spiritualist Church, Pilate (ladies), Linedancing classes, Monthly social entertainment, Private parties, Quiz nights etc. We have planning approval for a small extension. We also need to address issues on health & safety. We are not part of a large organisation and able to provide for a 'knock down & rebuild' which would be the ideal. But in our small way we believe we can provide the extra space we require for a reasonable amount of money, and extend further the life of our Community Centre. Please help.
