It was fitting that for my birthday, along with some friends, I got to see the UK Tree of the Year. The Gilwell Oak, used as a hiding place by Dick Turpin and now enjoyed by guests to the Head Quarters of the Scout Movement. It is stunning. Some people ask: ‘Why a Tree of the Year?’ I say: If it gets people talking, thinking about trees and appreciating them more, then why not.
