Weʼve raised £340 to buy The New Bevan Church, Grove Road, New Barnet, for the local community.

Funded on Tuesday, 15th October 2019

    Story

This church was built in 1958 and has been the hub of the local community since then, with 3 generations of residents passing through its doors for Sunday worship, weddings, funerals, baptisms, senior citizens' lunch club, weekly children's club, mother and toddler club, weekly keep-fit club and school holiday children's activities, all being provided for the last 18 years by The Barnet Christian Fellowship.

For many senior citizens, the lunch club is the only time they leave the house, and the only opportunity they have to talk to anyone.

A lot of the local children are from low-income or one-parent families, and the children's club provides them with somewhere safe to go instead of hanging around on streets.

For many local residents, this church provides a symbolic sense of security, and it is the first place they turn to in times of emergency, distress, depression, grief or loneliness.

The owners of the church want to sell it but the local community has successfully had it listed as an Asset if Community Value. We now have just 6 months to raise the funds to buy it.

All donations received will be transferred to Community Action Matters CIC (Company number 11947368) which is a community interest company we have set up specifically to bid for the purchase of the church.

If we are unsuccessful in buying the church, we will put the money towards the cost of renting alternative premises and funding other community projects. The money donated will not be wasted.

We simply cannot lose our little church. Please help us to save it.

Donations to the church itself have now reached approximately £130,000, but we need to supplement that by crowdfunding online, so please continue to donate and to share the page.

The total amount of money we need to raise is still about £900,000. However, I've amended the target to just £10,000 in order to raise the money in bite size chunks.
