Story

I intend to swim in an unheated swimming pond at least twice a week for a year. The endeavour started in August 2016 and I will continue swimming until August 2017. I am documenting my swims on facebook. My aim is to raise money to improve teenage mental health through supported counselling. As a science teacher and Pastoral Head with nearly 23 years' experience of classroom teaching, I am fully (and tragically) aware of the increase in mental health problems among teenagers in Wiltshire (and the UK in general) . I sincerely hope that by supporting cheaper counselling for families and individuals I can make a difference and give young people a chance of happiness in today's complicated society..

A cold swim on 1st December! The water was 1 Deg C but I was well supported and cheered by my husband and Rory who owns the pond.

Yesterday (29th November) was the coldest yet. The water was 2 Deg C and there was a thin layer of ice over half of it. the other half was liquid due to the water movement provided by Rory's Pond. But the sun was shining and warmed by my bike ride home and the wetsuit I got in an d swam around a bit. The feeling of forcing my way through the ice was rather odd and It did take a while to warm up after though!

I think this whole cold water acclimitisation business must actually work! Today the water was 6 Deg C and I stayed in for quite a few minutes with no wetsuit - only a rash vest, wetsuit boots and gloves. It was a gorgeous November afternoon - and after a hot run home from work a quick swim was exactly what I needed. Then home to a real fire and chili con carne. It was quite nice to know that Rory and Elizabeth know I was in the water - and would probably rescue me before i got hypothermic!

Somewhere in a pond in Wiltshire,,,

I have taught science, maths (and other subjects) to teenagers for 22 years and am also qualified as a counsellor. I am deeply concerned about the impact increasingly common and disabling mental health problems have on the happiness and welfare of teenagers.
