Story
This story is about my husband, Ramadan, a Bedouin man from Dahab, South Sinai, Egypt.
Today, July 4th is Ramadan's 30th birthday. For months I have been thinking about planning a big party for him. But the Bedouin don't typically celebrate their birthdays in such fashion, so he nixed that idea. He didn't want anyone making a fuss about him.
Then I had a grand idea to gift him an Open Water Diving course, since he recently did his first dive and really loved it. So while discussing the logisitics of this, he stopped me in my tracks. He said, "how much money are you spending?" I said, "I don't know, about 200 Euro?" He put his head down, took a deep breath, looked at me and said "for my birthday, I want you to take that 200 Euro and give it to the poor people in Dahab."
My heart sunk all the way to the floor. Ramadan, not concerned with material things, or extravagant experiences, is happiest when he is helping people. It's one of the qualities that made me fall in love with him.
Ramadan understands how his people are suffering. Since the devaluation of the Egyptian pound, and the recent increase in petrol prices, the costs of basic necessities has skyrocketed, and wages remain the same. Some families may not even be sure where their next meal will come from.
So on his birthday, if you'd like to give Ramadan a present, please donate here. The money will be given directly to Ramadan and his family who can help delineate the funds to families who need it the most.
An example of just how far the dollar will go here:
With $1.00, you could provide a heaping bag of vegetables for a struggling family.
$5.00 would purchase two small chickens.
For $10.00, a family would be able to feed their children for at least a week.
For $30.00, you could fill the gas tank of a pick up or jeep so supplies can be delivered to the desert.
And with $50.00, you could help a family cover their utility bills, with more to spare for groceries.
Thank you!
