Story
We have set a target of £500 but we want to help raise as much money as we can for a local community group close to our hearts. Both our families have been affected by this horrible disease, my Gran who sadly passed away in 2015 and my wife’s Papa who is now in a home.
This amazing group have provided an incredible care service to my wife's Papa and we would like to repay them by helping raise funds.
EK Dementia Carers Group is the only charity in East Kilbride providing daycare support to people with DEMENTIA and their Carers. Over 11,000 hours care each year.
They simply cannot survive without public support. They have to raise £50,000 each year to continue providing over eleven thousand hours of direct care and support to people with dementia as well as support for their family Carers.
They do NOT pay fundraisers or directors, and their admin is carried out by volunteers. This means that every penny received or saved goes directly into providing care and support to people with dementia and their carers.
In total, an estimated 850,000 people in the UK have dementia. This will rise to one million by 2025 and to 2 million by 2050. (Source, www.dementiastatistics.org, Nov 2017)
It is estimated that there are 93,000 people in Scotland with dementia, and that the figure will double in just one generation. (Source, Azheimer Scotland, Nov 2017 )
Of the 32 Local Authority areas in Scotland, South Lanarkshire has the fourth highest prevalence of dementia (est 5,577 people), with only Glasgow (8,116), Edinburgh (7,647) and Fife (6,661) having more. In actual fact, Lanarkshire as a whole (10,460) has 28% more people with dementia than the highest region in Scotland (Glasgow). (Alzheimers Scotland, Nov 2017)
Since first providing daycare in 1993, the Group has provided 280,000 hours of care to people with dementia. Currently 11,000 annually.
