For the second year running, we organised a charity cycle and charity night for the purpose of raising funds for the Renal Unit within Monkland's hospital.

My mum has renal (kidney) disease which developed into kidney failure, so she's been on the NHS's waiting list for a kidney transplant for the past year or so. The wait is impossible to estimate; it could be six weeks or it could be six years. In the meantime, she's been doing dialysis; a daily treatment which does the failing kidneys' job for them, cleaning the blood and removing waste from it.

Renal disease and failure are very complex conditions which, for my mum, has involved regular hospital visits and daily medication whilst the dialysis itself involved initial surgery, large amounts of equipment at home and a daily clensing through the machine.

The time, effort and support given to my mum by the doctors, nurses and staff in the Renal Unit at Monklands hospital has been outstanding. Theyve made a difficult situation as easy as possible.

In return, we wanted to raise money which will go directly to the unit and it's patients, to assist with necessary financial support and to allow them to continue to offer additional services, such as kids patients' parties. All for a good cause.
