In September 2017 the Caribbean nature Island of Dominica was hit by the worst hurricane in recent history, devastating homes, roads, hospitals, schools and the whole infrastructure of the island. Even the native island bird and symbol of the island the Sisserou parrot that lived in abundance in the mountain canopy has been endangered along with other native wildlife for the first time ever as the trees of the rainforest were stripped of their leaves and bark.

To date, many islanders are without homes, and many others without running water and electricity. The government are doing all they can to rebuild it, but work is slow and there is so much to do.

Dominica is made up of lots of small rural farming communities, who have lost many years worth of hard work nurturing mature fruit trees and crops and now face the prospect of starting all over again.

My family hail from this island and many still live there including my elderly Mother. The extended family and friends have formed a charitable group known as 'Roots in Dominica' (RIDOM) who are supporting schools, care homes and disabled people.

We have been lucky enough to have been donated a large quantity of hand tools and building materials, from a British construction company who used them in the training of apprentices.

Gathering and shipping large quantities of such items from across the UK to the Caribbean takes planning and costs money. Therefore we are seeking a modest sum of money to cover the costs of van hire, shipping an distribution to where the items are needed. The whole process is estimated to take the length of the summer of 2018 and photos of the endeavour and journeys will be posted as they happen.

Thank you for taking the time to read our page, all donations are greatly appreciated no matter how small.
