For my gold Duke of Edinburgh award, I have to complete a residential section for a minimum of 5 days. After looking at the countless options in Britain of residential opportunities, I decided that I wanted to help people in a developing country (something I've always wanted to do). By doing this internship in India next summer, I get to help people in a different country whilst experiencing their massively polarised culture, and I get to witness the difference in health care in not just a different country, but different continent to ours. As this is a career I want to pursue in the future it is important to me to see how the "other half lives", and to see health care in action in parts of the world where the medical issues faced are different from ours and the equipment available is not only at a different standard but is harder to come by. By volunteering on this placement I feel that I will grasp a new viewpoint on the profession which is important for a career such as medicine.
