SADAH – ( South Asian Diabetes Association in memory of Helen), is UK’s first charity solely focused on saving lives in diabetic patients within the south Asian Community.

Our founder & Director, Dr Veena Babu ( MBBS BSc MRCGP ) is a full time NHS GP and Media doctor. Her passion for this purpose stemmed from losing her mother to the dire complications of Diabetes, in June 2022.

**👀Background:**

Diabetes is one of the biggest health challenges facing the UK today with £1million an hour already being spent by the NHS on the condition. People from South Asian Communities are 6 times more likely to have Type 2 Diabetes in comparison to the general population. The number of Diabetes related deaths in 2021, was reported at 140,775. With approximately 3 million diabetic South Asian patients in the UK, we feel it important to steer focus on empowering, educating, and encouraging these patients- to take control of their Diabetes, their health and in effect their lives.

It is NOT yet fully understood why South Asians are so highly implicated by this disease but research points towards a combination of genetic predisposition, increased central adiposity and poor lifestyle choices.

⏳ **Present day:**

Our valuable Team of 19 today comprises of 8 core team members, 5 Community Leads,

3 trustees and 3 clinical advisors- all who volunteer to serve this purpose amidst their respective busy schedules.

Our goal is to promote Health Education for South Asians and to eradicate type 2 Diabetes from this diaspora in the UK through interactive educational workshops, personalised nutrition plans and group exercise classes.

This year- we hosted workshops around the UK within churches, mosques, temples, Gurudwaras, held multiple online educational sessions, partnered with the teams at tropical sun food, Dishoom , Sarvana Bhavan, BBC Asian network , engaged in corporate collaborations with KPMG, BT to name a few..
