    Story

Stainforth, South Yorkshire, is a town in which 70.7% of households suffer from between one and four dimensions of deprivation. The four dimensions are as follows:

    • employment: where any member of a household, who is not a full-time student, is either unemployed or long-term sick,

    • education: no person in the household has at least level 2 education (see highest level of qualification), and no person aged 16-18 is a full-time student,

    • health and disability: any person in the household has general health that is ‘bad’ or ‘very bad’ or has a long term health problem, and

    • housing: the household's accommodation is either overcrowded, with an occupancy rating -1 or less, or is in a shared dwelling, or has no central heating.

This deprivation is physically manifested in the form of litter and waste throughout the town, exacerbated by the lack of bins. SERV (Stainforth Environmental Regeneration Volunteers) is a volunteer-led group which aims to solve the issue. Since it was founded in March 2017, the SERV street cleaning team have collectively filled over 1760 black bags of rubbish picked from the streets of Stainforth. SERV hopes to solve the issue of litter in Stainforth and to inspire locals with a sense of pride for their community.

    To combat the litter problem:

    • A team of volunteers go out every Monday and Thursday to clean waste and litter from the streets

    • Trees are planted and planters are filled around the town, allowing the town to be more aesthetically pleasing

    • School talks are to be held to educate children on the impact littering has on both the town and the environment

    • SERV are also looking to introduce new bins to Stainforth, looking to add them first to areas that need them most

All donations made will go towards the purchase of new plants, planters and bins as well as purchasing gear for the street team to continue doing their job.
