Story

Mahan Singh, will be attempting to conquer the highest peak in the United Kingdom of Ben Nevis on the 28th of September. The highest peak on Ben Nevis is 4,408 feet tall, and we have therefore set him the target of raising 4,408 pound for Sikh Channel Aid.

The following donations from this event will go towards funding of the following two projects;

Sikilghar Sikhs Madya Pradesh

Madhya Pradesh is located in central India and is home to 1000’s of Sikligar Sikh’s. Sikligars Sikhs were the lohars (ironsmiths/blacksmiths) who once specialised in the craft of making and polishing weapons. The advent of modern weapons and industrial technology has hit the Sikligars hard economically.

Sikh Channel Aid visited the Sikligar community and saw their terrible living conditions first hand and we discussed their livelihoods and needs. Thankfully we were also able to deliver aid work in the form of basic food amenities, footwear and plastic waterproof sheets to use as roofs. None of the houses or the Gurdwara had a fully covering roof.

The Sikligar Sikhs advised us that they do not want or need money, they want jobs. We have taken it upon ourselves to run a project to help up skill these individuals that have been left behind as others progress around them. Over the upcoming months we will be raising funds, so we can help these Sikligar Sikhs become self-reliant and self-sustained. Sikh Channel Aid will restore their faith in humanity and assist in driving their community forward out of poverty.

Nepal Shelterbox appeal

We have partnered with ShelterBox, an international disaster relief charity that delivers emergency shelter and vital aid to people around the world.

On 25th April 2015 a 7.8 magnitude earthquake occurred in Nepal killing over 8000 people and injuring more than 19,000. Hundreds of thousands of people were made homeless as a result.

Sikh Channel Aid donated nearly £60,000 to ShelterBox enabling them to supply ShelterKits to communities in Nepal allowing them to start rebuilding and repairing homes.

Sikh Channel Aid is planning to go back to Nepal in 2017 to assess how we can further help the communities affected by the earthquake. Once an assessment has been made, we will deploy a team there to help in any way we can.

We are currently working with ShelterBox to create a long term vision as to how we can support each others work.
